SED is uniquely positioned to work with both the public and private sectors. Within its region, it is not limited by Federal, State or Municipal boundaries and can operate without many of the limitations imposed on government departments.
SED must reflect the needs of the region, and to do that it undertakes community consultation and is involved in numerous regional networks. The culmination of that consultation is SED's Strategic Regional Plan (SRP) (pdf 1.6Mb) which addresses regional development priorities. The recommendations of SED can have an impact on the region, through the re-allocation of resources to meet identified needs.
The strategies within that SRP have been aggregated under two thematic drivers:
Sustainable Development incorporates all aspects of development, from planning to implementation, encompassing both the social and the built environment, with the overriding theme of sustainability. As a general rule, all development should be influenced by the sustainability of the proposed outcomes.
Pride in the Community refers to the human face of development, emphasising the need to maintain and strengthen the social fabric of the region. SED has an important role to play in helping to lessen social dysfunction within the region.
